Care professions

These three roles are regularly confused, including by the people who perform them. The confusion is costly: a file submitted under a title that does not match the actual experience is a fragile file.

Home support worker

A home support worker assists a person in their own home with the tasks of daily life: getting up and going to bed, washing, dressing, meals, shopping, keeping the home, and attending appointments. The support is broad and continues over time.

Qualification expected: Of the three, this is the role where experience counts for most relative to a diploma. What is expected: verifiable experience with older people or people with reduced autonomy, attested in writing, and a language level sufficient to understand an instruction and report on a situation. Exact requirements vary by country and by employer.
Where it leads: Mostly employment in private households, sometimes through a home care service. This is the role most represented among the positions we handle.
Role of certification: Real, documented experience counts for more than a favour-granted attestation. A recognised certification turns an acceptable profile into a solid one, and often becomes decisive when several candidates apply for the same position.

Care assistant

A care assistant works within a care setting, under the responsibility of nursing staff. They take part in hygiene and comfort care, monitor the person's condition, and pass their observations to the care team.

Qualification expected: A diploma is expected, and it must be recognised in the destination country. Recognition of a foreign diploma is a process in its own right, conducted by an authority of the host country, separate from the immigration application and often longer than it.
Where it leads: Care facilities, residential settings for older people, hospital departments.
Role of certification: Of the three, this is the role where certification is most decisive: without a recognised diploma, or without a completed recognition process, practice is generally not possible. Presenting yourself as a care assistant without being able to demonstrate it weakens the whole file.

Personal support worker

A title used in Canada for staff who assist people with reduced autonomy in the activities of daily living, in a facility or at home. The job title changes from province to province: préposé aux bénéficiaires in Quebec, health care assistant in British Columbia, personal support worker in Ontario.

Qualification expected: Specific vocational training is generally expected, its content and length set by each province. Some provinces maintain a registry of staff authorised to practise. Always check the requirements of the province you are targeting, not those of "Canada" in general: they are not the same.
Where it leads: Long-term care facilities, seniors' residences, home care services.
Role of certification: Because both the title and the training vary from province to province, the first thing to establish is the exact title used where you are aiming. A file built on the wrong title starts with a needless handicap.

Why certification decides everything

A foreign employer does not know you. They cannot travel to watch you work. All they have is a file — and the authorities, still less than the employer, judge on documents alone.

Certification plays three roles. It attests to a level of competence. It makes your experience legible to someone who knows neither your country nor its training system. And it lets your profile be attached to a recognised occupational category, which governs everything that follows.

Conversely, experience that is real but impossible to document remains, administratively, experience that does not exist. This is the most frequent and the most unjust difficulty we encounter: years of actual work, for private individuals, with no written contract and no payslip.

It can be worked on, but in advance. Have your successive employers sign attestations while you are still in contact with them, with verifiable contact details, exact dates and a description of the duties. Keep everything that carries a date. That work is done months, sometimes years, before departure.
